Nanhai Sports Center stands as Foshan's premier newly-constructed multi-purpose venue, featuring a comprehensive range of facilities, including an arena, swimming pool, sports complex, and complementary amenities. With its expansive layout, substantial investment, diverse sports offerings, and versatile functionalities, the center is a pivotal societal project, supporting both athletic activities and entertainment events. The arena, with a seating capacity of 10,000, is designed for high-profile basketball games, while also accommodating large-scale esports events, showcasing its dual-purpose capabilities, and creating an ideal environment for sports and esports development in Foshan.As part of the acoustic enhancement project, our focus was on the swimming arena within the Nanhai Sports Center. This arena primarily hosts swimming competitions, while also serving as a training ground for daily swimming activities. The swimming arena has a total volume of approximately 62,260 m³, with 500 fixed seats, providing an average volume of approximately 124.5 m³ per person and an average free path length of around 27m.
Based on architectural analysis, the swimming arena has a rectangular layout with multiple parallel walls, one of which is an expansive glass curtain wall, potentially leading to acoustic defects such as flutter echoes and multi-reflections. Given the sizable volume of the swimming arena and its long average free path, excessive reverberation time and poor speech intelligibility can become issues. To ensure the optimal functionality of the competition area, specific sound-absorbing treatments were needed.
